It is essential that all equipment for operating and maintaining the distribution system is exercised (i.e., tested or used) on a regular basis. This ensures the water flow is minimally disrupted in the event of an emergency or during regular repair work. Valves can be easily operated if they were previously located and exercised but if a valve is not exercised, it may seize up or become difficult to turn, making the repair work much more difficult.
